Boys Football Match reports v Mereside and Marton. Print E-mail

Written by Mr Truelove

Waterloo Boys’ Football team have completed their league fixtures and are awaiting the final league table to discover if they have reached the knock out stages.

On Wednesday, Waterloo travelled to Mereside. Waterloo started badly, going a goal down, but managed to turn things around and were two one up just before the break thanks to a stupendous header from David Roberts and a rasping left foot drive from George Davison.

However, Waterloo were caught napping and lost possession cheaply and let Mereside in for a goal to make the score 2 – 2 at the interval.

A slight telling off at half time saw Waterloo emerge in a more determined mood and they banged in 3 more goals without reply. Liam Walton snatched a goal and two from Ben Wilson, including a 25 yard thunderbolt gave Waterloo a 5-2 win and the points they needed.

Yesterday, Waterloo took on Marton where they lost 2- 1 in January. Only a win would give Waterloo any chance of qualifying.

The game was extremely tense with both sides creating chances, but the goalkeepers from both sides ensured that the scores stayed at 0 –0 at half time.

After half time, both teams went in search of a winner. Fortunately, it was Waterloo who struck first. A scramble in Marton’s box saw a deflected shot squeeze in at the far post. Waterloo had their lead and needed to protect it.

The game opened up more and more, but a brilliant finger tip save at full stretch from Lee Squires kept Waterloo’s lead in tact. The minutes ticked by and Waterloo hung on to secure two wins in two days.
