Success at Lancashire Football tournament Print E-mail

Written by Mr J Truelove

On Saturday 1st December 2007, Waterloo Boys Football Team represented Blackpool at the LFA Lancashire 7 a side tournament at St Bede’s School, Blackburn. There were 2 groups of 3 teams. In group A were Blackpool, Preston and Blackburn.  Group B consisted of Morcambe, Skelmersdale and Darwin.

Blackpool watched the first game between Preston and Blackburn end in a 0 – 0 stalemate and knew that any victory against Preston would send them through. A tight match against Preston saw them emerge with a 1-0 victory thanks to a Liam Walton winning strike in the second half.

In the final group game, Blackpool faced Blackburn with Blackpool having already qualified. Again, the teams were evenly matched and the game was heading for a 1 all draw, with Karl Jones on target for Blackpool, when an error in the dying seconds handed Blackburn a 2-1 victory. This meant Blackpool had to settle for runners up spot and faced the winners from group B, Darwin.

In that semi final, Blackpool played extremely fluently and showed good organisation and skill. They found themselves 2- 0 up after the first half with Liam Walton and Karl Jones grabbing a goal apiece. Blackpool continued their dominance in the second half and added 3 more goals. Liam Walton completed his hat trick and George Davison scored the fifth to seal an emphatic win and a re match with Blackburn in the final.

The final was a tight affair, but Blackpool buckled first. A seemingly harmless long range cross some how dropped in at the far post late in the first half to give Blackburn the edge. Blackpool regrouped at half time and went in search of the equaliser. It duly came with minutes to spare, as Lewis Wilson hit home for Blackpool sending the game into extra time. The first half of extra time came and went and the second half seemed to be heading the way of the first with penalties looming, which Blackburn had needed in their semi final. However, with about a minute to go, Blackpool attacked and a rasping drive from Lewis Wilson crashed in off a post to seal a well-earned victory and the tournament win.

Waterloo will now represent Blackpool and Lancashire at the North of England tournament in early 2008, also to be held at Blackburn.

Waterloo Squad: Lee Squires (capt), Ben Wilson, Josh Errington, George Davison, Lewis Wilson, Karl Jones, Liam Walton, Josh Edwards and David Roberts.
