Waterloo School Gardening Club
Growing a greener generation

Gardening Club was formed in the summer term of 2007 and is run by Mrs. Harris and Mrs. Flint (School Governor) assists.  It takes place after school every Monday 3.45 till 4.45 and welcomes children from the ages of four to eleven.  We are members of the Royal Horticultural society, Breathing Places, part of the British Council potato growing project and the year of food and farming.
The children learn many aspects about gardening and growing vegetables while building on their social skills, creativity, confidence, and healthy and sustainable living. We aim to create a positive, greener future for our next generation.
Last year we focused on growing vegetables and we successfully grew tomatoes, carrots, lettuces, green beans, radishes and peas. All the vegetables grown were eaten by the children or they took them home to show their families their growing achievements. This year as well as growing more vegetables, we are working on a huge gardening project: designing and creating a sensory garden for the use of the whole school. It will include plants to appeal to all of the senses: sight, sound, smell, touch and taste.
In addition to growing vegetables and designing gardens, the children grow and nurture the plants which are in planters positioned around the school building to help make it a brighter and happier place to work in and visit.
