Waterloo Nursery is the first year in the Foundation Stage at Waterloo Primary School. We are a 52 place maintained Nursery.

At Waterloo Nursery we aim:
To provide a safe, secure and caring environment which allows all children to achieve to their full potential.

Children learn through play and exploration, in a welcoming, stimulating and supportive environment.

Above all we strive to provide an exciting play based curriculum which encourages young learners to… find learning fun!

We learn and make discoveries through different topics including Nursery Rhymes, Traditional Stories, Growing, Food and Ourselves. We celebrate events during the year such as Diwali, Chinese New Year, Christmas, Easter and Bonfire Night, and explore changes through the seasons. Children are motivated to learn as we provide varied and meaningful experiences which build upon what they already know and upon each child’s interests.
We enjoy making use of the local environment by visiting places such as Spen Corner, local shops and the library.

The children are cared for and taught by Mrs Harris, and by a team of excellent Learning Support Assistants who work throughout the Foundation Stage. Mrs Haywood and Mr Green are currently supporting in Nursery, while Mrs Kilby, Mrs Barker and Mrs Calvert are in Reception.
We have close links with Reception and share the outside area, so children throughout the Foundation stage have opportunities to play and explore together. During the transition into Reception children visit their new teachers in school with their parents, and also visit for story times and singing sessions.

About the Nursery

Waterloo School Blackpool Nursery About Waterloo Nursery

Staffing:

Waterloo School Nursery has two teachers; Mrs Casey (Nursery Leader) and Mrs Clements. We are supported by a team of Learning Support Assistants who work throughout the Foundation Stage. Mrs Kilby and Mrs Barker are working in Nursery this term, while Mrs Haywood, Mrs Calvert and Mr Green are working in Reception.

Times of day:

Children normally attend either five mornings or five afternoons.
The morning session is from 9.00am until 11.30am.
The afternoon session is from 1.00pm until 3.30pm.

Uniform:

Your child will be encouraged to explore and investigate many messy materials including soil, paint, shaving foam, glue, flour and sand. They need to be able to crawl, climb, run, move freely and safely, and not feel too worried if clothes get dirty. Although we do wear aprons, inevitably sleeves get wet and spills occur. For this reason we recommend that your child wears our uniform. This is simply a navy blue sweatshirt and white polo shirt with the Nursery logo.

We ask that they wear navy, black or grey trousers or skirt, preferably that they are able to pull up.
Please do not send children in jeans, dungarees or trousers with a belt. Children are much happier when they can go to the toilet without having to ask for help.

Your child will have access to outside in all weather.

Please make sure they have a warm, waterproof coat and a pair of wellies. We have a waterproof overcoats and trousers to put on over their clothes on very wet days.

"Wearing our coats and clearing away leaves"

In summer your child will need a sun hat. On hot days please make sure that they have had sun cream applied. Girls can wear a blue gingham dress and shorts are also practical.

Sun hats can be bought from the school office for £3.

Snack and café:

Children visit the café everyday. We offer a variety of snacks, and encourage each child to try the food. Sometimes we choose food to link with our topic, for example if we are learning about colours we would offer a variety of coloured food or if we are learning about journeys we would eat food from around the world. At other times your child may bake buns, butter toast, make sandwiches, or eat hot food. The café provides us with opportunities for learning in each area of the curriculum.

To cover the cost of snacks and cooking items we ask for a contribution of £1 each week.

We offer milk daily. It is subsidised by Blackpool Borough Council. At present the cost is £7 per term.

As part of the healthy schools initiative Blackpool Borough Council is providing a free piece of fruit each day for infant children. We will send this home, but ask that you put any rubbish in the bin, thank you.

Trips :

We aim to take every opportunity to make use of the local environment by visiting places such as local shops, the library or Spen Corner. Please see the events page or topic page for photographs of trips.
A permission slip for children to go on visits in the local area can be downloaded. Click Here
In the Summer term we enjoy taking the children further afield and this usually involves hiring a coach.

Nursery Policies

Waterloo School Blackpool Nursery

Phased Admision Policy
  • During the first week of the Autumn term children and parents are visited at home by the teacher and nursery nurse.  The admission form is completed and a starting date for nursery is arranged at this time.
  • To ensure a smooth transition between home and school we admit the children in small groups each morning and afternoon.  We find that this helps the children to settle into their new surroundings.  Starting dates are chosen at random, the nursery staff arrange a mix of gender and dates of birth in each group.
  • The children are admitted in groups of six.  On the day of starting parents are invited to bring their children at 9.30 a.m. or 1.15 p.m. which is thirty minutes after the nursery opens.  During the first half hour of each session the nursery staff try to ensure that the established children are settled before the new intake arrive.
  • Parents are welcome to stay and work with their child, or to leave them if they feel they are settled.
  • Children with special educational needs may be admitted at a later date after consultation between the parents, headteacher and local authority.

Occasional Vacancy Policy

Vacancies may arise during the year for a number of reasons.

  • Decisions may need to be made about which children are to be admitted to fill the vacancies. The decisions will be made as quickly as possible by:
  • Any two members of the admissions panel, or the Appeals panel in exceptional circumstances (e.g. illness).
  • All admissions will be in conformance with agreed criteria, in accordance with the Local Authority Policy, and records kept of decisions made.
  • If there is a surfeit of places, we may in certain circumstances, offer a place to a child whose 3rd birthday is in the autumn or spring term. Such places would be offered in January (for children who are 3 between September and December) or in May (for children who are 3 between January and April).

Waterloo Nursery follows Blackpool Borough Council’s Admission Policy. If you have any further enquiries please contact the Nursery Teacher or Progress House.

Nursery Songs & Activities

Waterloo School Blackpool Nursery SONGS and ACTIVITIES

SONGS and ACTIVITIES
In the second half of the summer term we are going to be learning about animals, and in particular chickens. We are getting some eggs to look after in an incubator and hope they will hatch in the middle of June. We will be listening to stories and learning rhymes about animals and chickens. Here are a few you could learn at home.

Higgledy, piggledy, my black hen,
She lays eggs for gentlemen;
Sometimes nine, sometimes ten;
Higgledy, piggledy, my black hen.

I had a little hen, the prettiest ever seen,
She washed me the dishes and kept the house clean;
She went to the mill to fetch me some flour,
She brought it home in less than an hour;
She baked me my bread, she brewed me my ale,
She sat by the fire and told many a fine tale.

Little Bo-Peep has lost her sheep,
And doesn't know where to find them.
Leave them alone,
And they'll come home,
Wagging their tails behind them.
To market, to market, to buy a fat pig,
Home again, home again, jiggety-jig;
To market, to market, to buy a fat hog,
Home again, home again, jiggety-jog.

We are learning about the story of the Little Red Hen. Click here to download a recipe to bake bread.

We are also learning about Chicken Licken. Here is a rhyme to learn.
