Welcome to Year 1 Print E-mail
Written by Mrs V Woodcock

altYear 1 is the first year in Key Stage 1, but has very strong links with Foundation Stage (Reception). During the Autumn Term, children learn in a similar style to that experienced in Reception. Year 1 children still have access to learning through sand, Role Play, Puppet Theatres, listening centres, computers and much more. We work hard throughout the year to encourage the pupils to work more independently and equip them with the skills necessary for them to access the curriculum in Year 2. The three Year 1 classes follow the same curriculum and the pupils' work is planned together on a weekly basis by the Y1 teachers; Mrs A Spencer (Y1AS), Miss A Morton (Y1AM) and the Year 1 leader Mrs V Woodcock (Y1VW). They are also assessed by the teacher and the level is reported to parents in annual reports.

Homework

In line with the rest of the school we use Learning Logs in Y1. This encourages practtical, brain building activities which we hope will promote discussion and learning as a family. We encourage children to show their work in different ways such as, drawing, writing, photographs, cut outs from magazines and the internet. If you would like ideas or help with Learning Logs, please ask your class teacher, or pop along to Learning Log Club on a Wednesday after school where teachers will be happy to help.

Homework is set on a Friday and is always linked to literacy and numeracy topics for each week. It should be returned to school on the following Wednesday, when children have the opportunity to share their work with the class.

Please take time to read with your child for ten minutes every night and add a comment or sign their Reading diary. Pupils who practise their reading regularly at home tend to make significant progress and it also helps your child in all areas of the curriculum.
