The Year 5 team is led by Mrs. B. Cropper, with Miss C. Potter (Y5CLP) and Miss J. Whitby (Y5JW) completing a very experienced teaching team. The year group is strongly supported by our similarly experienced Learning Support Assistants Mrs. Scott, Mrs. Lloyd and Miss Kirikmaa. Excellence and enjoymentAt Waterloo we believe that children learn better when motivated by interesting and enjoyable activities. In Year 5 we always look for new ways of stimulating children’s learning and making the curriculum come to life. Educational visits include the Planetarium and Liverpool museum and a Geography field trip in rural Sedbergh, as well as visits to school from a Greek theatre company and representatives of various religions. We also have a number of themed days including Greek day, an archaeological dig and many Gifted and Talented sessions. French is now also an integral part of the Year 5 curriculum. Growing upYear 5 is a very important year for our pupils. Staff are focused on ensuring that children are prepared academically and personally for life in Year 6 and beyond. We expect children to be well organised and able to work with increasing independence to help them to cope with the challenges they will face in their future school careers. We believe that children in Year 5 are old enough to be responsible for ensuring they have the correct equipment at all times, whether it be P.E. kit or homework. Children will often blame their parents when they have forgotten something, so please make sure you communicate well with your child to ensure there is no confusion. (Please click on a picture below to view full size image) HomeworkIn Year 5 children receive daily homework to begin to prepare them for secondary school. Each Monday children receive a sheet explaining the week’s homework which they stick into their orange Homework Diary. We ask that parents sign this sheet to show that they are aware of that week’s homework. It is extremely important that parents support our homework policy by ensuring that all homework is completed and reminding children that they are responsible for ensuring it arrives in school on time. Teachers usually require that children complete homework at playtime or Golden time if it is not brought in on time. We also reward children who regularly complete homework and read at home.
