Year 6 is the final year at Waterloo School and a very important one too! The children learn to become more independent in preparation for high school. It is during this year that children sit their Key Stage 2 SATs, so the children need to prepare to work very hard. The three Year 6 classes follow the same curriculum and the pupils' work is planned together on a weekly basis by the Y6 teachers; (Mrs E Rathbone maternity leave),Miss S Harper Miss A Pettett and Mr P May. The children are supported by our team of LSAs; Mrs Bootle, Miss Danson and Mrs Ashurst and Miss Dolan.
Along with the hard work involved the children also take part in many enjoyable activities including; World War 2 Day
Year 6 trips include a visit to the Sikh Temple, The Preston War Museum, Blackpool Coastline and hill walking. In Year 6 the children also have the opportunity to experience a residential visit to Tower Wood in the Lake District. Children gain a variety of life experiences and for many it’s their first time away from home, and the first time they have had to make a bed!
Homework For the majority of the year the children are expected to read every night, learn their spellings and complete a Literacy and Numeracy task every week. The homework structure changes slightly in the run up to SATs where they are required to follow a revision programme. The parents are briefed on how this works prior to the SATs.
PE Children are expected to have their PE kits in school every day, although we are timetabled for PE on Mondays and Thursdays. |
