Tower Wood Trip

In October 2007, over 40 Year 6 pupils from Waterloo Primary School took part in a five day residential to Tower Wood Outdoor Education Centre on Windermere.

This trip allowed pupils to experience new activities and acted as an extension of the outdoor opportunities currently available within Waterloo.

Whilst pupils were away they took part in several activities such as: climbing, abseiling, canoeing, kayaking, sailing, mountain biking, hill walking, and raft building.

As well as allowing pupils to experience some new activities it allowed them to develop personally, as they were responsibility for sorting out their kit, food and being in the right place for the right activity at the right time.

Residential trips to Tower Wood are now a firm fixture on Waterloo’s outdoor education timetable, allowing in excess of 40 Year 6 pupils the chance to benefit from this opportunity.

Waterloo is very fortunate to have had the financial backing of the Gerald Richardson Trust who have contributed to the overall cost of the trip. This has reduced the cost to parents allowing more pupils to attend.

As well as their annual trip to Tower Wood, pupils at Waterloo take part in outdoor education all year round through links with Palatine Community Sports College. Owing to this link, pupils take part in activities such as climbing, canoeing, team building / problem solving, orienteering and hill walking all year round.

Graham Little, Outdoor Education Co-ordinator at Palatine commented, “At a time when many primary schools steer clear of outdoor activities, it is great to see that the staff and pupils at Waterloo welcome the activities we provide.

The enthusiastic approach of the Head Teacher, Mark Gray and PE Co-ordinator, Miss M White, mean that many pupils get to benefit from new and exciting activities.”
